CHRIST in the Passover Seder by Deborah Brown Wieske

CHRIST in the Passover Seder

April 23, 2011

By Deborah Brown Wieske

Every year since 2000, Sojourner Ministries has held a Christ in the Passover Seder in North Dallas. The director and founder, Steven Ger, is a fourth generation Jewish believer in Jesus Christ, or Yeshua, as many Jewish believers say. He is a Professor, speaker, author and musician as well as a husband and father. His organization is dedicated to exploring the Jewish heart of Christianity.

The evening begins with the traditional kindling of the candles and offering of the blessing by his wife or one of the other women in attendance. Then one can hear the blowing of the Shofar in traditional Jewish form. Steven begins the evening by teaching traditional Jewish songs which he sings and plays on his keyboard. They are fun, and the children clap and learn to sing in Hebrew. As the actual presentation begins, Steven gives an in depth look at the history of Passover and how Jesus can be seen throughout its entirety, from the stripes and holes in the Matzah to the Afikomen that is hidden away until after dinner. He leads the guests as they participate in each aspect of the Seder from dipping the parsley in the salt water to experiencing the tears of the bitter herbs. Steven’s presentation is peppered with humor showing his wit and charm but never diminishing the seriousness of the evening. Just before the dinner they hide a piece of the Matzah, called the Afikomen, which has been wrapped up in a linen napkin. Later after dinner the children make a game of finding it for a small token.

This is by far the best Passover presentation I have ever been to and each year they fill to capacity. For the past two years they have had 500 in attendance and 425 the year before. Reservations for this year’s event need to be made by April 18th to ensure a seat. It will be held on April 23, 2011 beginning at 6 pm and running till 9:30 pm. It will be held at the Hyatt Regency North Dallas in Richardson, Texas. Anyone interested in attending should contact Steven Ger at SojoSteven@aol.com or call 972-226-7654 for reservations. The event is free of charge but is secured by a credit card to cover unused meals and late cancellations or no shows. There is also an opportunity given during the presentation for the guests to give a love offering to the ministry. There will be tables set up in the lobby to purchase books, DVD’s, and traditional Jewish items as well. Hope to see you there.
